Gums or gingiva is that part of the mouth that covers the bone of the teeth and surrounds the neck of the teeth. These are constantly under the attack by mechanical and chemical forces.
The color of gingiva is coral pink, but it varies from person to person. The size of the gingiva is related to the blood supply to the cells of the gingiva. The shape of the gingiva varies and depends on the shape and position of the teeth. The consistency of the gingiva is supposed to be firm and resilient in a healthy environment and should be tightly attached to the bone beneath.
The surface texture of the gingiva present a surface as that of an orange peel being stippled. This stippling is a form of reinforcement for fixation. It is presented in healthy gingiva and its loss or reduction is a sign of gingival disease.
